MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — In tonight’s What’s Working, a Mobile landmark is celebrating 50 years. For the past half of a century, Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream has satisfied the sweet tooth of countless customers.

Mr. Edward Widemier opened Old Dutch on Old Shell Road 50 years ago.  It was an old Texaco station that he converted into an ice cream parlor.  Cammie Wayne bought it back in 1998.

Wayne says working at Old Dutch was her first job when she was 16. She purchased the business twenty-one years ago and has kept the decor virtually untouched. She kept the colorful wallpaper in the dining area. She also kept the vintage metal chairs, but she changed the color of the seats. She has left the huge bay windows in the front because they represent the area where the cars would drive in, when the building was a gas station.

“As far as changing it up, I didn’t have any desire to do that,” Wayne said.

Wayne says owning Old Dutch has given her a front-row seat to experiencing people’s special moments.  She has greatly enjoyed seeing different generations come in to get ice cream.

“I have people propose marriage here. I have seen people come here after a funeral because it was their special someone’s favorite place,” Wayne said.

The major change that Wayne has made is that she now makes all her own ice cream.  She started making it in a small room at her shop on Old Shell Road but has now expanded into a creamery off Halls Mill Road.  She is proud that everything that goes into the ice cream is homemade.

‘The cookies, we crumble the cookies. We bake the red velvet cake. We bake the birthday cake. We do all that at my creamery,” Wayne said.

Wayne adds her original intention was just to make ice cream for her store, but it’s become so popular, you can now find it in over two dozen different grocery stores and many ice cream parlors across the Southeast.

As for the most popular flavor? Cammie says, “Creole praline.”

Cammie is planning a big ice cream party celebration for the 50th Anniversary of the store this summer.  All customers will be invited!
