ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — WKRG News 5 has obtained through an open records request video from an officer-involved shooting in Escambia County.
The State Attorney’s office reviewed the shooting of Antonio Desmond Smith that occurred on Erress Boulevard on November 10, 2018 and determined the use of force by an Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy was reasonable and justifiable under Florida law and no criminal charges will be filed against the deputy.
Smith’s grandmother reported to deputies where he was and that he had active warrants for his arrest. When deputies arrived, Smith pulled away after being told not to. Deputies say he drove away striking a deputy who fired a shot through the windshield hitting Smith in the arm.
As a result of this incident, Smith was charged with aggravated battery upon a law enforcement officer, resisting officer without violence and several drug charges.
His next court date is set for March 5, 2019.
