JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Good news concerning COVID-19 vaccinations and those eligible can schedule an appointment as early as next week. Because of expansions. It’s now easier to register.

Whether you call the vaccine hotline or log onto CovidVaccine.UMC.edu state leaders promise wait times have dropped and you no longer will get a busy signal. Also, there are more opportunities to get your vaccine at hospitals and doctor offices.

If you’re 65 or older, or if you are younger than 65 and have a pre-existing health condition you can now schedule an appointment for as early as Jan. 25. Staffing on the COVID-19 vaccine call lines, as well as online capacity, has quadrupled. Paving the way for shorter wait times.

“We have 37,000 doses already allocated to us,” Governor Reeves explained. “We are working to get additional allocations by moving those that are currently allocated to long term care facilities over to our general population.”

This extra vaccine is because only about a third of nursing home staff have opted to be vaccinated at this time.

“The intent was to give the user to view the opportunity to view available appointments as they enter the site,” Mississippi Emergency Management Director Greg Michele told us. “As opposed to going to wait in a waiting room. Also with the call center, you should not get busy signals. 20,000 opportunities were loaded today.”

Those 20,000 have already been taken. However, there are 144 private clinics and hospitals now offering vaccines. You can call them directly to make an appointment.

“We’re going to work on that list and we are going to get that published,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said. “So folks know where they can go to get vaccinated in addition to our drive-thru sites.”

Over the next two weeks, MEMA and the department of health expect to increase traffic at the 19 drive-thru vaccine sites statewide maned by the national guard. And if a site doesn’t use at least 65% of its doses that site will not be restocked.

This past weekend Mississippi has jumped from 50th in the nation in vaccine distribution to the upper thirties. For all the contact information to schedule through the state log onto CovidVaccine.UMC.edu or call 1-877-978-6453, or 601-965-4071.

The state of Mississippi is currently giving COVID-19 immunizations for the following:

  • All Healthcare Workers and EMT / paramedics
  • Persons 65 years of age or older
  • Persons 18 – 64 years of age with underlying medical conditions
