DECATUR, Ala. (AP) – A jail inmate has walked away from a gas station while he and other inmates were heading for a work detail in Alabama.

Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin says deputies are searching for 30-year-old Abdullah Kaaba Russell, of Decatur. The sheriff’s office says the van driver stopped at a gas station about 5:30 a.m. while on the way to bring inmates to an area business, and Russell fled.

The Decatur Daily reports deputies responded, and the other inmates were returned to the jail for questioning.

Russell is described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 125 pounds. He was wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans and glasses.

Russell was serving time for theft. Franklin says he had less than a year remaining but now faces a second-degree escape charge.
