Florida firefighter under investigation for shooting a shark

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WBBH/CNN) – A Greater Naples firefighter is under investigation after he posted a video of a man shooting a shark with a gun.

Buddy Tomei posted the video to his Instagram this week with the comment, “This is how Captain Buddy deals with bullies.” He said he only messes with the ones who mess with him. Tomei said he already had 3 rounds in it.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they’re investigating the incident. They said it’s illegal and a second degree misdemeanor to shoot marine life in state waters.

It’s unclear where Tomei shot the video. The waters fall under federal jurisdiction nine miles offshore. Those who know him said Captain Buddy spends most of his time fishing far offshore.

However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it is legal to shoot a shark once it’s already been caught to bring it on your boat in federal waters.

The video has been picked up by other accounts and now has nearly 130,000 views online.
