A man was shot and wounded after he reportedly rammed a deputy with his car Sunday night, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the officer was conducting a traffic stop in the area of Daughtery Road near Pearce Road in north Lakeland at about 7:45 p.m. when for unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle put his foot on the gas and hit the deputy with his car, which caused the officer to roll onto the hood. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed, but deputies said the officer is expected to be okay.

After the collision, the suspect fled the scene and ended up on the Polk Parkway. Deputies eventually caught up with him in unincorporated Auburndale near Berkely Road and Pace Road, which runs off the Parkway.

Deputies said the driver jumped out of the vehicle and shots were fired. It’s unclear if gunfire was exchanged, but the suspect was injured. He was treated at the scene until paramedics arrived and rushed him to an area hospital.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

The names of those involved in the incident have not been released.
