BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A 2-year-old child is dead in Birmingham after an incident in the 1000 block of 31st Ave N.
Birmingham Police say the incident is still under investigation.
“This is heartbreaking for all of us, for those who have kids, for those who don’t.” Birmingham Capt. James Jackson said. “It’s a sad day for this community.”
Jackson was asked if the child accidentally shot himself. He answered that is still under investigation, but there is no threat to the community.
Jackson stressed parents should practice gun safety and keep all firearms properly secured.
“For those who carry guns, we ask them to be safe. Know how to use a gun. Have your gun in a safety lock box, especially around kids,” Jackson said.
Family identified the child to CBS 42 as 2-year-old Ke’Anthony Jelks.
