Alabama STAR ID required to fly in 2020

MONTGOMERY, Ala (WIAT) — If you plan to board a plane or enter some government buildings, you’ll soon need a STAR ID. The good news is you have until October 2020 to get one.

The Secure, Trusted, And Reliable ID or STAR ID is Alabama’s compliance to the REAL ID passed by Congress.

“STAR ID is basically a more secure form of identification, it protects against fraudulent documentation, it’s in response to terrorist acts such as 9/11,” said Cpl. Jess Thornton.

In the upper left-hand corner of your driver license, there will be a gold star proving the ID belongs to the person using it.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says, you will need these documents to get a STAR ID; your birth certificate or valid U.S. Passport, Social Security card and documents proving where you live.

“It’s not unnecessarily for flying, it’s also to gain access to certain federal facilities, and some of those facilitates are already requiring STAR ID’S,”

There’s no additional cost for the STAR I.D.

“You could go and get a STAR ID now even if your license is not expired in advance, it will just be a duplicate, you can also renew your license up to 180 days before they’re up for renewal,”

Alabamians have until October 2020 to get STAR I.D.
