Alabama prison officials want to consolidate prisons

State / Regional

MONTGOMERY, Alabama  (Nextsar)  Alabama’s Department of Correction Commissioner Jeff Dunn, says they are looking at new plans to address Alabama aging prisons system.

The department is exploring the idea of consolidating its 15 men’s prisons into three regional facilities.

ADOC says, one of the regional prisons would be a specialty facility to house medical care for mental health, and special need inmates.

In terms of paying for the plan, ADOC says it wouldn’t require any additional funding in their budget in for this plan, and they would save from consolidations.

The commissioner says the dollar amount for the new prison plan is somewhere in the $800,000,000 ball park, if they were to go with a bond option.

Right now, the plan is in the contract review stage.
