Alabama inmate shot in buttocks during escape attempt

ELMORE, Ala. (AP) – Prison officials say an Alabama inmate who scaled a razor-topped fence during an escape attempt was shot and wounded.

A statement from the Department of Corrections says 32-year-old Sedric Clayton was treated for a minor shotgun wound to a buttock during an attempted breakout Monday afternoon.

The agency says the man climbed a razor-topped fence at Staton prison in Elmore and got outside the facility’s security area when an officer who was in a guard tower ordered him to stop.

The inmate kept running and the officer opened fire. Clayton was captured later on prison property.

The statement says the man was treated at an area medical facility and now faces charges for the escape.

Clayton already is serving 30 years for a 2016 murder conviction in Elmore County.
