MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile’s college bowl game is no longer being called the Dollar General Bowl. For now, it’s being called the Mobile, Alabama Bowl.
Bowl President Jerry Silverstein told News 5 that negotiations are currently going on with a title sponsor. He could not identify what company that might be.
The college bowl schedule was released last week and the Mobile, Alabama Bowl is scheduled to be played Monday night, January 6th at 6:30 p.m. live on ESPN. If an agreement can’t be reached with a title sponsor, the game will be played as the Mobile, Alabama Bowl.
Mobile City Councilman John Williams says he supports the bowl and its future, but was surprised to learn the game is no longer being called the Dollar General Bowl. He said he intends to discuss the future of the bowl game with Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson this week.
Last year, Mayor Stimpson said the city’s $900,000 investment in the game is not sustainable.
Mobile’s bowl game features a team from the Mid-American Conference vs a team from the Sun Belt Conference. The game in 2020 will be the 21st year that game has been played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
