Deputies kill suspect allegedly holding meat cleaver in Escambia County

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man shot and killed as 65-year-old John Calvin Young.

Residents who live in the complex say they heard a commotion and several gunshots around 4:00 this morning. They say Alabaster Gardens is an apartment complex primarily for seniors, and that the man who was shot was a resident there.

Officials say a suspect was shot and killed after refusing to put down a meat cleaver.  Here is the post from the sheriff’s office:

Just before 4:00 a.m. ECSO dispatch received a call from a person at Alabaster Garden Apartments off of Massachusetts Ave. The caller told dispatchers that a person had been murdered inside one of the apartments. Deputies arrived on scene the suspect opened the door holding a meat cleaver and another cutting instrument. The suspect refused orders to drop the weapons. Less than lethal options were attempted several times to try to get the suspect to comply. The suspect then attacked deputies with the meat cleaver at which time he was shot and killed. No other person was found inside the apartment. The deputies were not injured. Per policy the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating. –ECSO post
