SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — A Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s K-9 is recovering after he was injured during an arrest.
The sheriff’s office says it happened Tuesday afternoon when deputies were called to a burglary in progress on South Airport Road in Milton.
Sheriff Johnson was first to arrive on scene and found a broken window covered with blood. Johnson called for backup. K-9 Deputy Miller and K-9 Orkon arrived shortly after.
After several attempts to call the suspect out of the building, K-9 Orkon went into the home.
After a few moments, the sheriff’s office says the suspect could be heard yelling. Deputy Miller went into the home, finding the suspect in the attic punching Orkon. Orkon was severely injured, the sheriff’s office says.
Sheriff Johnson and another deputy, Deputy Ramirez, arrested the suspect who refused to exit the attic.
K-9 Orkon had to be rushed to the emergency animal treatment facility where he had surgery.
The suspect was identified as Alan Lee Gilkerson, a white male, 48 years of age from Milton. He was arrested and charged with felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, resisting arrest, felony theft, burglary, and criminal mischief.
K-9 Orkon is expected to recover from his extensive injuries.
