Police: Social media accounts of shopping center rape unsubstantiated

Northwest Florida

CRESTVIEW, Fla (WKRG) – Crestview police say they want to get the word out about a social media post claiming a woman was raped in a shopping center parking lot. A post on Friday on a page called “Crestview Crimes and Break-Ins” claimed that a woman was raped by two men. But police say they’ve received no reports of any attack.

The post reads,  “a friend of our roommate was raped last night in the tractor supply [sic] parking lot by 2 men.”

The post, also included the victim’s abduction “in a van/truck,” “We have no reports, no active investigations, of anything of that sort occurring anywhere in the city over the last several days,” Criminal Investigations Sgt. Josh Grace said Wednesday morning.

Police want people to think twice before sharing unsubstantiated claims because they might cause needless stress,  “If anything like that does occur, please, please contact the Crestview Police Department immediately so we may investigate,” Sgt. Grace said. “We treat all allegations of rape with
respect and discretion.”
