MILTON, Fla. (WKRG)- Over 1,000 students had the chance to get some hands on construction experience today at the Santa Rosa County Fairgrounds.
The Florida Department of Transportation sponsored the first Florida Construction Career Days. Students learned the basics on operating heavy machinery, engineering, and bridge construction as well. Officials say construction workers are in high demand, that’s why they want to create opportunities for the next generation of workers. Multiple contractor and engineering firms were at the event looking for talent.
Rannel Davis is a highschool senior that is interested in construction.
“I’d like to be a semi lowboy operator,” Davis said. “I do like to operate equipment, I’ve done it before. It’s just one of my interests because I grew up around it.”
Officials says students that attended the event can apply for schlorships that can lead into a construction career.
