The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says the death of a Mobile, Alabama man at Crab Island in Destin Saturday is believed to be an apparent drowning.

A medical call of an individual in possible cardiac arrest on a pontoon boat was received around 4 p.m. May 26th, says the sheriff’s office.

Deputies say the victim, later identified as 36-year old Essie Mitchell of Mobile, was transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

Witnesses say Mitchell had gone down a slide into the water and a short time later was spotted floating face down.

He was transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where medical staff reported he had water in his lungs.

An autopsy is being scheduled.
