Navarre man uses barbecue pit to help hurricane victims

Northwest Florida

NAVARRE, Fla. (WKRG) — A Navarre man who owns Beach Bum BBQ is using his barbecue pit to help Hurricane Michael victims.

Bruce Hilt is also part of a non-profit organization called Operation Barbecue, which helps provide food to victims of natural disasters. He says he’s preparing to smoke 30 turkeys for people in the town of Clarksville, Florida.

“They have no power,” Hilt said. “They have no water, the only food they get is pretty much from churches that help out or from relief organizations like our own.”

Hilt says Operation Barbecue has served 800,000 meals from Tallahassee to Panama City after Hurricane Michael.

Hilt says donations come from the community and different companies. He says he’s glad his barbecue pit can be used to help people.

“It’s people like us, that own restaurants and just have a heart to volunteer and love to barbecue,” Hilt said.

Hilt says the group plans to help out storm victims during Christmas as well.
