ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) – An isolated road near Flomaton that’s overgrown with thick brush is not a place many people notice when traveling on Highway 113.
“The road was an abandoned road that had been closed down years ago,” said Sheriff Heath Jackson.
Carol Lane became the latest puzzle piece to a missing person’s case Sunday night when a driver stopped for a restroom break on the side of the road.
“Walked into the bushes and noticed the body and called 911,” said Sheriff Jackson.
He says investigators were able to positively identify the body found as Latonya Baxter. Her daughter reported her missing on September 12th. Her roommate, Giles Jones, is charged with premeditated first-degree murder after blood was found inside her home and a picture of Baxter’s body was discovered on his cell phone, according to Pensacola Police.
“Probably if he hadn’t stopped there we wouldn’t have found the body for a long time,” he added.
Sheriff Jackson says the driver just happened to stop in the right spot. His office has already been assisting with the investigation since Giles vehicle was reported in nearby Century between the hours of noon and 3 p.m. September 11th.
“We coordinated some efforts to get out and do some checking, pull some video,” said Sheriff Jackson.
The sheriff believes Baxter’s body was left in the woods during daylight hours, but the location kept the body out of sight.
Tressie Bethea sent in this photo a roadside memorial started near the location where Baxter’s Body was found.
(9/27/21 10:44 AM) — According to Sheriff Jackson, a man driving on Highway 113 pulled over between 5 and 6 p.m. to use the restroom on the side of the road in the woods.
The driver discovered a body after walking a short distance into the woods where he found the body. The surprisngly okay shape of the body helped make the connection that it was Latonya Baxton.
Pensacola Police Department was called. Sheriff Jackson said if the driver hadn’t stopped it would probably take months before her body was found due to it being a remote area. The road has been closed for years and is overgrown.
