PACE, Fla. (WKRG) — A handyman in Santa Rosa County is accused of raping a woman inside her home.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office held a news conference on Tuesday to announce the arrest of 36-year-old Dean Allen Matthews of Milton.
The sheriff says Matthews went to a woman’s home in Pace in January under the guise that he was going to fix something in her house.
Sheriff Bob Johnson said what happened next was a “brutal assault” that left the woman with major injuries.
Sheriff Johnson said normally DNA evidence in rape cases normally can take eight to nine months to process. However, he says FDLE expedited this case due to the severity of the allegations.
Matthews was booked Monday and charged with sexual assault.
When talking about how Matthews was arrested, Sheriff Johnson said Matthews actually went on Facebook to defend himself on posts where he was accused of rape. The sheriff said Matthews reached out and asked if deputies could interview him about what he called harassment on Facebook.
Deputies went to his home to take the report and arrested him.
“I’ll tell you, he’s not exactly a genius, but he sure helped us out, and we really do appreciate it,” Sheriff Johnson said.
