UPDATE (01/15/20) — Tom Becnel, the father of Damon Richard Becnel, provides a statement to News 5:

“My granddaughter is in a very comfortable, safe home with her two dogs. She is trying to resume a normal life of school and activities. I ask that you give the family the time and privacy that we need to help my granddaughter return to the normal life of a 14 1/2 year-old child. The incident that took place before Christmas is not indicative of my family’s values or behavior. I hope my son gets the treatment he needs and you will give us the privacy we need at this time to heal.”

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) – A child installed cameras in her home to prove her father’s abuse.

The 14-year-old’s mother says her daughter tried to report abuse by her father for years, but no one believed her, and that’s why she decided to take matters into her own hands.

After watching the full four-minute video, we now know this particular exchange was in response to the victim’s dog trying to protect her from her father.

Suspect: “I don’t care if he’s protecting you and (inaudible), I’m not putting up with you ever (expletive) snapping at me again. Get it? Get it, dog?” (Smacks dog in his head and shakes him.)
Daughter: Screaming, “Dad! Stop!” (She continues screaming as the man in the video pulls the dog onto the ground and starts choking him. His daughter jumps on him, screaming for him to let go of the dog.)

According to an arrest report, the girl turned over two videos to authorities.

Suspect: “I am not going to be (expletive) talked to by you or a (expletive) dog in my (expletive) house again. (Pushes daughter’s face) Do you understand me?”
Daughter: “Yes.”

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputies identify that man in the video as Damon Becnel. He is seen in this video screaming in his daughter’s face. He even appears to headbutt her and push her to the ground, as she is heard crying.

He hits one of the dogs in his head repeatedly, shakes him, and even holds what deputies say is a knife to the dog’s throat, as he pulls the dog off the bed and onto the floor, choking him. Becnel’s daughter jumps on her father and screams for him to stop.

Suspect: “I don’t care if it’s a (expletive) dog or a kid, I’m not gonna be disrespected in my (expletive) house, and if I have to (expletive) cut this God (expletive) dog’s (expletive) eyeballs out, I’ll (expletive) do it!”

After deputies watched the tapes Becnel’s daughter gave them, he is facing charges of child abuse and animal cruelty.

Suspect: “That (expletive) dog better (expletive) obey me. Do you understand, dog? Do you understand?”
“Do you understand you little (expletive)?”
Daughter: “Yes.”
Suspect: You gonna (expletive) fight me? You can’t win.”
Daughter: “Are you gonna kill me?”
Suspect: “Maybe.

Becnel was arrested on January 2, 2020. He was released on a $4-thousand bond and is scheduled to be in court on February 4th. No word where his daughter and her pets are now.

According to the arrest report, Becnel was a prominent business owner. His last known business was ABEC Resorts in Destin. According to the company website, ” Abec Resorts offers rentals at Silver Shells Beach Resort and Spa, Silver Beach Towers, and the Palms of Destin Resort and Conference Center. Along with offering Destin vacation rentals, Abec Resorts is the onsite management company for these properties so travelers can easily get the assistance they need during their trips. ”

Suspect: “That (expletive) dog’s gonna know I’m the (expletive) boss before it’s over with. Not because I gotta go feed it. I’m gonna smack the (expletive) out of that (expletive) dog and I’ll strangle that mother (expletive), and I didn’t cut his windpipe off; it was a (expletive) strangle-hold of his skin.” “Don’t you (expletive) with me.”
“Don’t you (expletive) tell me how to deal with dogs. How long have you had dogs? How many years have you actually taken care of a dog? And trained one? Three? I got 42 years of it.”
“And I don’t care if it’s a (expletive) dog or a kid, I’m not gonna be disrespected in my (expletive) house, and if I have to (expletive) cut this God (expletive) dog’s (expletive) eyeballs out, I’ll (expletive) do it! You understand me?”
Daughter: “Yes, sir.”
Suspect: “It’s a dog. Ain’t no (expletive) dog ever gonna snap his (expletive) mouth at me. You get it? (smacks dog in his head.) You understand me? I’m the boss here. Not that dog. And I don’t care if he’s protecting you and (inaudible), I’m not putting up with you ever (expletive) snapping at me again. Get it? Get it dog?” (Suspect smacks dog in his head and shakes him.)
Daughter: Screaming, “Dad! Stop!” (She continues screaming as man in video pulls the dog onto the ground and starts choking him. Daughter jumps on him, screaming for him to let go of the dog.)

Suspect: “I’m killing the dog. Get out.”
Daughter: Crying, “No you’re not. Dad stop! I’ll call the police.”
Suspect: “You gonna call the police on me?”
Daughter: “No, I’m not. But please stop, dad. Please let me go to sleep. Please, please dad, please.”
Suspect: “You better let go of that (expletive) dog right now.”
Daughter: “Please don’t kill him, dad.”
(Crying, inaudible exchange.)
Suspect: “I am not going to be (expletive) talked to by you or a (expletive) dog in my (expletive) house again. (Pushes daughter’s face) Do you understand me?”
Daughter: “Yes.”
Suspect: “And that (expletive) dog better (expletive) obey me. Do you understand, dog? Do you understand?”
Do you understand you little (expletive)?
Daughter: “Yes.”
Suspect: You gonna (expletive) fight me? You can’t win.”
Daughter: “Are you gonna kill me?”
Suspect: “Maybe.
“(Inaudible) you mother and you’re gonna be a (expletive) like the rest of them. But I’m not having a (expletive) dog in my house who doesn’t understand who’s the boss. And I know more than you do.”
Daughter: “Okay, then we’ll get rid of him tomorrow.”
Suspect: “I know more than you do. Stop thinking you know everything.”
Daughter: “Why are you so abusive?”
Suspect: “It’s my job.”
