The Old Dauphin Way district is known for its historically preserved homes, and shady trees. It is not known for shootings.
“I saw blue flashing lights and walked out on my balcony and there was a policeman shining lights in people’s yard,” said a woman who asked not to be identified.
She told us the lights woke her up.
“And he asked me if I had seen anybody walking up and down the street, and I told him know and that’s all he would tell me.”
She said news about what happened around 1:30 in the morning on Sunday has spread. Police tell us, it started when a woman came to a stop near Dauphin and Monterey.
“Four unknown male subjects approached the vehicle, one of the male subjects brandished a weapon and then fired it in the vehicle striking her once in the face,” said Officer Terence Perkins, Mobile Police Dept.
The victim was actually able to drive herself to the hospital after she was shot. Because of her injuries, police say they’ve had to wait to get a better description of the suspects — in order to issue a “be on the look out” warning to other local agencies.
“Once we get a better description of what they looked like we’ll definitely put a bolo out, not only to law enforcement officers, we will also put it out seeking the help from media,” said Perkins.
That means for now those suspects are on the loose.
“I was shocked absolutely I didn’t think that was what had happened.”
Residents along this quiet street of Monterrey say they’ve always paid close attention to their surroundings, but for now, they tell us, they will keep an extra out as they wait to learn more.
