UPDATE TUESDAY, MAY 31ST, 2016

Clarke County District Attorney Spencer Walker said they are waiting on toxicology reports on the driver.  No charges have been filed at this time.  Walker said the driver drove off the end of the road into the Alabama River early Friday morning.  The two men in the car drowned.  Walker said it’s possible the driver was not impaired at the time of the accident.  He said drivers have inadvertently driven into the Alabama River at the Gainestown landing in the past.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s office is investigating the deaths of two men found dead in a car pulled from the Alabama River.  The incident happened just at the start of the Memorial Day weekend.  Locals say it happened around the Gainestown Landing.  Clarke County Sheriff Ray Norris sent a picture of a heavily damaged car pulled from the river.

He said they found two black men dead in the back seat.  The sheriff’s office found a woman along the riverside who identified herself as the driver.  Beyond that we don’t have much more information about what happened or if charges are pending.
