6 years ago News 5 reported on restoration efforts of the submarine USS Drum. The World War II era submarine has been a fixture at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park since it was donated in 1969.
At the time, we met Tom Bowser and Leslie Waters. As a team they have been instrumental in maintaining and restoring the sub for the past several years.
Bowser is a veteran of nuclear submarines. He has volunteered his time helping restore the boat for the past ten years. Waters is employed at Battleship Park and has been working on the Drum for 19 years. They’ll both be on hand for a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Drum’s commissioning on November 1, 1941.
That ceremony will take place at 11am, Saturday, November 19th at the Aircraft Pavilion at Battleship Park. The public is invited to attend.
