‘The Great Food Truck Race’ Makes a Stop in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) – In downtown Pensacola Wednesday, you may have noticed a few more food trucks than usual.  That’s because The Food Network show ‘The Great Food Truck Race’ chose Pensacola to film an episode for this coming fall.

The hustle and bustle of working in television is stressful, but add in the pressure of a competition between two different food trucks and the kitchen is bound to get hot.

Chef’s prepped and boiled as generators buzzed.  Local food trucks were joined by out of towners.  The out of towners are competing for $50,000 while the local trucks are just serving lunch on a Wednesday.

“iI’s different seeing the behind the scenes,” said George Makris, who owns Hip Pocket Deli in Pensacola.  “How much goes into an actual show, for a 30-minute viewing how much they have to do. There’s a lot behind the scenes.”

Makris loved having the out of town trucks join them Wednesday afternoon.

“I think it’s great for Pensacola,” said Makris.  “We’re bringing some food trucks here and people get to get familiar with the food truck scene.”

That’s exactly what the crowd, gathered in the Pensacola City Hall parking lot, did.

“We gotta go,” said two women who came to check out behind the scenes of their favorite show.  “We gotta go. We have to go.”

The family arrived hours early, excited to see all the trucks arrive and set up.

“We’ve been fans since like 2010 and I was super stoked to come over here and be nosy,” they said.

After some tense moments and some long lines, it was finally time to dig in. Even the mayor stopped by to grab lunch, excited for the opportunity to showcase the city.

“This is just… Out of nowhere, we get The Food Network calling Pensacola because people do their due diligence,” said Mayor Ashton Hayward.  “They do their homework, they look at great coastal cities in Florida.”

Then, it was time to pack up and head out.  They’re on to the next challenge.

If you missed the trucks on Wednesday, they’ll be around downtown Pensacola Thursday afternoon.  Make sure you bring cash if you’d like to grab some food!
