A hair salon is transforming young cancer patients into their favorite Disney princess or movie character.
Revive Spa and Salon just started the Kansas chapter of The Magic Yarn Project, a nonprofit that creates yarn wigs for children diagnosed with cancer. The chapter is now looking for donations to help make more wigs.
“They just put it on, and you can just see the glow in their face,” explained Kayci Love, head of the Kansas Chapter.
Excitement and a big smile — just a few things young cancer patients experience after opening a box from The Magic Yarn Project.
“Every time they get to open that box and see their character wig or what they requested,” said Love.
From Rapunzel to Captain Jack Sparrow, the hair stylists make yarn wigs to give to cancer patients for free.
“They can’t really wear typical wigs because of the sensitivity in their skin for chemo treatments,” Love said.
The wigs are an escape for the kiddos.
“It’s more of a whimsical way for them to get out of the negativity of the situation that they’re in,” said Love.
For the hair stylists, The Magic Yarn Project is a way to give back to the community.
“We were really searching for something that we can partner with that meant a lot to us, but that we could do to help other people too,” said Love.
The nonprofit has chapters located all around the United States. Unfortunately, it’s experiencing a backorder of 1,000 wigs. The newly-formed Kansas chapter wants to help fulfill those requests.
The group is hoping to raise $2,500 to go to Alaska to train with the nonprofit’s founders.
“We get to learn first-hand how to make each wig and how to organize the nonprofit in an effective way,” Love said.
The Kansas chapter has made nine wigs so far, but the ladies are ready to send out more wigs to hospitals and families.
“It’s just such a gift for us,” said Love.
The Kansas chapter covers other states such as Missouri, Nebraska, Indiana and Minnesota.
Revive Spa and Salon is taking donations at the salon, located at 1861 E Madison Ave Suite 100, Derby. Donations can also be made online.
