President Donald Trump has nominated Colonel Lorna Mahlock to be brigadier general of the Marine Corps.
If approved, Mahlock will be the first black female to serve in that capacity. Mahlock is currently a deputy director at corps headquarters in Washington.
According to CNN, she previously served in Okinawa, Japan as a commanding officer — where Mahlock was in charge of 1,300 and civil personnel.
Women make up just 8 percent of the Marines.
But in 2012 corps officials launched a diversity campaign and expect to see an increase in the female ranks.
