TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – The 2018 Florida governor’s race has been called for Republican Ron DeSantis.
The Republican defeated Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum Tuesday night in a nail-biting race. Gillum conceded just before 11 p.m.
DeSantis is a Florida native and graduated from Dunedin High School. He went on to graduate from Yale University and later went to Harvard Law School.
While he was at Harvard, DeSantis earned a commission in the U.S. Navy as a JAG officer. During his active duty service, DeSantis supported operations at Guantanamo Bay and deployed to Iraq as an adviser to a US Navy SEAL commander. He earned a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service and the Iraq campaign medal.
Before running for governor, DeSantis was the U.S. Representative for Florida’s Sixth District.
President Donald Trump endorsed DeSantis before the Primary Election and has since visited Florida several times to rally with him.
