Orange Beach Marina Targeted by Thieves

Authorities are searching for at least two thieves that hit Sportsman Marina early Thursday morning stealing Garmin displays from at least five boats.

The digital displays help navigate and find fish.  Surveillance video from one of the multi-million dollar watercraft captured images of at least one of the suspects.  Within three minutes of coming onboard, he had gotten a 16 inch Garmin display and made his getaway.

“He had a cordless screwdriver and wire cutters in his hands, gloves on and a hoodie, so he knew what he was doing and he knew exactly which boats he wanted to get,” says captain Jeff Colley.

“Showed up the next morning to work like we normally do and some of our stuff is missing,” says captain Clay Dubuisson. “You notice it immediately.”

Gaping holes left in the consoles of the boats.

“Just for the machine is six grand,” says Colley, “and then you’ve got installation, fixing what they tore up. It could be 10 thousand dollars per boat just to get it all back right.”

This isn’t the first time, Sportsman has been hit. Surveillance photos from a year ago show a similar suspect. Police believe it is the same guy.

“We need it to end cause it costs a whole lot of money and a whole lot of grief and it needs to stop,” says Colley.

The night before the thieves hit, one of the captains was sleeping on his boat. He says it’s probably a good thing he wasn’t there the night of the thefts.
