Suspect killed, deputy injured after home burglary in Santa Rosa County

MIDWAY, Fla. (WKRG) -

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office confirms a suspect is dead and a deputy has been injured in the Midway community.

The scene is located in a neighborhood off Bright Water Drive.

Deputies received a call Tuesday afternoon about a suspicious person in the neighborhood. While deputies were on their way, they learned the person had broken into a home. As the first deputy arrived, the man was leaving the house.

According to Sheriff Bob Johnson, there was a confrontation in the driveway. The deputy was injured, and the suspect was shot and killed.

Sgt. Rich Aloy told News 5 the deputy was not shot and will be okay.

A woman was inside the home at the time of the break-in but wasn't hurt.

"Violent confrontations are part of the business," Sheriff Johnson told News 5 at the scene. "We have violent confrontations and it turns life or death, hopefully the right person ends up on the ground, and in this case that's what happened."

"You break into somebody's house in Santa Rosa County and start assaulting people, you get what you get," the sheriff said.

Piola Conner lives on the street where the shooting happened.

"You never would think that this would happen in Gulf Breeze," Conner said. "This is the safest area. There's no crime here. Unfortunately it happened so we're really shocked at everything that's going on here."

Jodi Helwig also lives on the street.

"I'm shocked," Helwg said. "This is a very safe community. We have police officers that actually live in our neighborhood. It's shocking that it would happen in Gulf Breeze."
