UPDATE: Deputies identify body found by children in Cantonment

CANTONMENT, Fla. (WKRG) - UPDATE (5:20 p.m.) The Escambia County Sheriff's Office says the man found dead at Elevenmile Creek has been identified as 36-year-old David Ashley Mixon Jr.

The sheriff's office says medical examiners have not released the cause of death but it does not appear to be foul play.

Eighth Grader Meaghan Heath says she was walking through the creek with some of her friends when they discovered Mixon's naked body.

"We were just walking when and I turned around to see how far back they were and when I turned forward I just saw him right in front of me and did not believe it was real at first," Heath said. "Then I realized it was a person and we ran back to get our phones."

Michael is Heath's father. He says he was shopping when his daughter called him and said what she had discovered.

"That was very surprising," Heath said. I've never found that. I've seen them but I've never come up on one, especially in a creek like that."

A death investigation is underway in Cantonment.

According to Deb Henley, a spokesperson for Escambia County Sheriff's Office, children found a body in Elevenmile Creek near Highway 297A and Highway 97. Henley says the children told a family member who reported the information around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.

Crime scene investigators are working to find out if foul play was involved, according to ECSO.

The identity of the individual has not yet been released but the body has been sent for an autopsy.
