Mobilians answer the question: ‘How Can Donald Trump Unify the USA? ‘

Following a historic victory on Election Day, President-Elect Donald Trump is beginning his transition into the Oval Office.

Thursday, he was invited to the White House by President Obama to discuss the transfer of power, and both men said the meeting was a success.

“Most of all, I want to emphasize to you, Mr. President-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds,” President Obama said.

President-Elect Trump replied, “This was a meeting that was going to last for maybe 10 or 15 minutes and we were just going to get to know each other. We had never met each other. I have great respect. The meeting lasted for almost an hour and a half. And it could have, as far as I’m concerned it could have gone on for a lot longer.”

The meeting at the White House may have been civil, but many people across the country say a Trump presidency is something they refuse to accept, and thousands stepped out in protest last night.

Anti-Trump demonstrators marched through the night carrying banners and blocking traffic in nearly 40 cities, and more demonstrations are expected tonight and through the weekend.

With so much division, we thought we’d make a sign of our own, asking a simple question with a not so simple answer; ‘How Can Donald Trump Unify the USA?’

We took the sign downtown, taped it to the tripod of our camera and let people do the talking. Here are a few of the responses:

“I feel like Donald Trump could unite the USA by bringing back its original Christian values and morals because a nation without God is a divided nation,” one first-time voter said.

“One of the things I think he should do is race relations. I think  police need to be more trained for sensitivity on how other people feel,” one man said. “Also, republicans and democrats, you have to reach across the table. Democrats need to understand that Donald Trump is now the President for four years. There are a lot of things we need to settle here. “

“I don’t know how Donald Trump is going to unite the United States…but I know it’s better than what Hillary would have done,” one young woman said.

“He can unite the USA by apologizing to all the ethnic folks he disrespected… black folks, Mexicans, Native Americans, women…you name it. The only way he can unite the USA is to apologize for what he says and he doesn’t apologize so he’ll never be able to unite the country,” one man said.

” Donald Trump can unite the USA by the kind of speech he gave the night he won when he was inclusive of everybody. He wants to be inclusive of all religions, all races. He says he is the president for all the people and I believe him and I trust him,” one woman said.

“Donald Trump can unite the USA by stopping killings and all these crimes with the police officers and helping everyone come back together to stop the racism.”

“If anyone listened to his acceptance speech, he’s sending out a message of unity and acceptance. Let’s forget about all the jargin he used to get there,” said one man who’s a Bernie Sanders supporter. “Forget about what came before. Look at this with fresh eyes. Have a revolution in your heart and get into the feeling of love that is all around you.”

It goes to show that sometimes the simplest question doesn’t mean it’s the easiest one to answer.
