POLICE: Prichard officers shoot dog attacking them following chase

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - Following a pursuit with Prichard Police, officials say officers shot a dog that attacked them while taking a suspect into custody.

According to Mobile Police, officers from the Prichard Police Department was involved in a pursuit that ended in Mobile Police jurisdiction in the 400 block of Driver Street on Sunday morning. 

Police say the James Wrightington crashed his vehicle and fled, but was caught after a short foot pursuit by Prichard PD. 

According to police, while the officers were taking the driver into custody, they were attacked by a dog. 

Police say officers fired, hitting the dog to stop the attack. 

Animal Control took the dog. 

We spoke with the owners of the dog, one of whom was Wrightington, the suspect in this case. His girlfriend, who is also the dog's owner, painted a different picture of what happened. She said, "As soon as the cop said get your dog, he fired shots and shot him. I mean he didn't give him no type of chance. I mean, he barely even finished his sentence before he fired shots." 

The girlfriend told News 5 the dog, named G-Block, was in surgery for hours Monday morning. She hopes the dog pulls through.
