Moving Mobile Regional Airport? Study set to be released

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - The Mobile Airport Authority will soon be releasing information about the proposed relocation of the Mobile Regional Airport to the Brookley Aeroplex.

Brian Belcher, Director of Marketing for the Airport Authority, says they have received a draft copy of the feasibility study the Airport Board commissioned.  Belcher says the final touches are being put on the report and should be ready for release next week.  Belcher declined to comment on any of the findings in the report, only stating it is a very detailed report.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Congressman Bradley Byrne, among others, have both voiced support for relocating the airport.

"I feel like Mobile's growth has been stifled by the Mobile airport being located where it is.  We've lost half of our market--if you just geographically draw a circle around Brookley and you draw one around regional, we realize that we have a lot of bleed off going to Pensacola," the mayor said in March.

In October of 2017, Byrne said it could change the face of Mobile.  "I think it would be one of those game changers of this area. I think it hampers us not to have an airport, not at the center of our economic activity," said Byrne.

FAA passenger data shows on any given year Pensacola has roughly two times the passenger traffic compared to Mobile.
