Mobile County names secondary teacher of the year

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - A big surprise Friday morning, when the Principal of Mary G. Montgomery high school walked into Laurin Tew's classroom and told her she is Mobile County's Secondary teacher of the year. Tew, a teacher at the school for four years, shed happy tears and received many hugs from students and staff.

"I came into teaching to change the lives of others. Just to think that anybody has noticed what I have done is just over the top exciting", said Tew.

She teaches special education language arts and reading, but her students say she does a lot more than that.

"Ms. Tew is the hardest working person I've ever met in my life. She's not only a teacher to me but a really good friend. She's always there for me when I need somebody. Any family problems, she's the one to go to. She's just a really strong, independent woman", said MGM Senior Taylor Havelin.

Principal Marton Firle praised Tew for going above and beyond the call of duty everyday. Firle said, "The world refers to Ms. Tew as a teacher but her students in a great quote refers to her as a hero."

"I come everyday to work with these children who deserve so much more than I believe they have gotten in the past and so I try to prepare them for the future, give them a competitive edge and make things better than the way I found them", said Tew.
