Mary G. Montgomery hosts National Day of Prayer service

SEMMES, Ala. (WKRG) - On a day for people to come together across the country in prayer, Mary G. Montgomery High School held a National Day of Prayer service.

Participation was optional, but dozens of students chose to pray with their classmates.

"I think it's a great opportunity for everyone in our school to come out and reflect on what God means to us and what prayer means to us," said Katherine Berryhill, a junior at MGM.

Organizers say MGM was the only public school in Mobile County to host a service. This year's theme is "Pray for America: Unity." Organizers say youth participation is particularly important.

"It is the youth in my heart that has the voice in this generation to provoke change in our states, our cities and across the nation," said Mykell Hudson who organized the service.

The Day of Prayer service at MGM came one day after there was an increased law enforcement presence on campus due to a threat of violence that was made on social media. Students say now more than ever, it's important for them to pray for one another.

"The fact that no one is afraid to come out and to do this and to stand up for God, I think it's very fitting," said Berryhill.
