MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile Area Water and Sewer System customers could soon be seeing their bills go up. The utility is considering a rate increase of 10 percent over the next two years.
Tuesday night officials took comments from their customers in a sparsely attended meeting.
The new proposal would increase the current rate by 5-percent next year to cover higher administrative fees and a small rate adjustment. Another 5-percent rate increase is planned for 2019.
MAWSS officials say the additional funds are needed to repair and replace aging infrastructure.
“The need is much greater than the resources have been and when we have a rate increase we are able to put more money into capital projects,” said MAWSS Director Charles Hyland.
The MAWSS board is expected to vote on the increase next week. If passed it would go into effect at the start of next year.
