Moving Airport to Brookley could be a huge economic boost

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson is weighing in on the possibility of moving Mobile Regional Airport commercial traffic from its location in West Mobile to Brookley Field, closer to downtown.

Stimpson said he believes it could be the single biggest economic boost for the city.

"I feel like Mobile's growth has been stifled by the Mobile airport being located where it is.  We've lost half of our market--if you just geographically draw a circle around Brookley and you draw one around regional, we realize that we have a lot of bleed off going to Pensacola," the mayor said.

Airport Director Chris Curry said it's a move that could take years and a lot would have to be done, including road improvements and building a new terminal.

But with the announcement that Florida-based Via Airlines will soon begin direct flights between Mobile and Orlando, with the possibility that some of those flights could originate from Brookley, the Mayor says other airlines are now starting to pay attention.

As for the site where Mobile Regional is currently located, Stimpson said the potential there is unlimited.  He says it could become a mega-site for economic and industrial development.
