Mobile County Commissioners still uncertain in funding USA stadium

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) - Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl confirms the commission is talking about a different figure than the $10m the University of South Alabama has asked for in its bid to build a new on-campus stadium.

Carl says, albeit unofficially, that numbers closer to $5m or even $2.5m are being discussed.

The University has asked both the City of Mobile and Mobile County to contribute $10m each for the new stadium.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson says the benefit for the city would be getting out from under millions in upkeep costs associated with the aging Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Bowl games currently played there would be played at the new South Stadium rent-free.

However, also being discussed, what benefit will Mobile County see from contributing to the project.

"There should be a cost-benefit to any development project that we're terming as economic development," says Commissioner Connie Hudson. Hudson says she has asked University officials for some hard economic figures on that but so far has not received the information.
