Boy drowns in grandparents' pond in Mississippi

VANCLEAVE, Miss. (WKRG) - A two-year-old boy drowned in his grandparents' pond in Vancleave during a family outing on the 4th of July.

Sheriff Mike Ezell of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to the property at 21500 Highway 57 Wednesday afternoon.

Bryant Chapman was taken to Singing River Hospital in Ocean Springs and then transferred to USA Children's and Women's in Mobile.

The family tells News 5 it took just minutes to realize he had run over to the pond. While out swimming in the pond earlier in the day, the family says he wanted to "prove he didn't need his swimmies." They remember him as "fearless." His father found him in the pond unresponsive and pulled him out. The aunt, who is a police officer, said they performed CPR on him, but it "was too late."

The family has set up a Gofundme account to help with medical and funeral expenses. To help, you can find more information here: https://www.gofundme.com/bryant039s-medical-amp-funeral?member=397548

The death has been ruled an accidental drowning, according to the sheriff's department.
