Job Market Not Kind To Young Adults

The parking lot at Mobile Fairgrounds today was jammed packed. The reason being that today was the 18th annual Business Expo & Job Fair. More than 90 vendors showed up to hear more than 3,500 interested applicants from across the southeast.

The job fair aims to help people that are struggling to get a job. The few people that we talked to all seemed to have the chips stacked against them and when looking at the labor statistics, especially for young adults, you understand why. The unemployment rate for people ages 20-24 years old is above 10%! That’s almost 3 points above Mobile county.

Everyone we talked to in this age bracket expressed the difficulty of trying to get a job. Most of them have been looking for a while and they were hoping to find a job or at least meet potential employers at this job fair. The youth employment rate even is affecting people out of college with degrees. They are struggling to even get their foot in the door.

There is some good news. Organizers of this event say this expo and fair are connecting people with employers and actually giving them the face to face connection that some people need. This expo continues to grow and with the turnout today, it will continue to help people in need of work.
