State legislators are filing bills to be taken up during the next legislative session. One of them would allow students to carry concealed weapons on college
Eight representatives have sponsored a bill that would propose an amendment to the state constitution, meaning if passed it would have to go before voters.
“There are just not enough police officers to be everywhere and this would allow you to protect yourself, heaven forbid something happen but you would have the opportunity,” said Rep. Mack Butler (R-Etowah County), one of the sponsors.
Right now concealed carry is up to schools to decide and most ban it. But the new amendment would give students the right at any higher-learning institution.
“Every single one of these mass shootings, the target has been a gun-free zone and my goal has been to remove as many of these zones as possible,” said Rep. Butler.
The Legislative session begins February 2.
