Homicide Suspect On the Run in Mobile County


UPDATE (8:45 a.m. 11/14) – Joseph Ryan Carter was arrested Sunday in Escambia County and was booked into Mobile Metro Jail, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE (1:05 p.m.) – The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has released new information Thursday afternoon into the murder investigation in Creola.

Deputies were called to the area on Interstate 65 around 2 a.m. Thursday morning. When they arrived, they found Joe Nathan Thomas with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

A female witness, whose identity is unknown at this time, told deputies she was in the car with Thomas and the suspect Joseph Carter earlier in the night.

The witness told deputies that she and Thomas were outside the vehicle when she heard a gunshot and saw Thomas fall to the ground. She fled into the nearby woods and contacted authorities.  At this time, the female witness is not being charged.

News 5 has also obtained new information about the suspect Joseph Carter. He is 30-year-old and is currently being charged with 1st-degree murder.

The U.S. Marshalls are assisting the Sheriff’s Office in locating Carter. If you have any information, you are encouraged to call 251-574-8633.

UPDATE (11:05 a.m.) – A spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office tells News 5 that the homicide occurred on Interstate 65 south of the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge (also known as the “Dolly Parton Bridge”), which is in Creola, Alabama.

ORIGINAL STORY – The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a man wanted for a homicide in Mobile County.

The Sheriff’s Office tweeted Thursday morning about the suspect:

At this time, the age of Joseph Ryan Carter is unknown. Carter has no history of arrest in Mobile County.

There are very few details available regarding the homicide in the County. A spokesperson with the Sheriff’s Office tells News 5 that they are assisting the Creola Police Department in the investigation.

News 5 is working to gather more information from both departments on the homicide. We will continue to update this story when more information becomes available.
