CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WKRG) – The Florida State Attorney’s Office announced their intent to pursue the death penalty for the man charged in the murder of a toddler in Crestview.

Cory Hagwell faces charges of Felony Murder first-degree in the death of 3-year-old Adelynn Merrell on November 9th.

The toddler was found dead in the wood behind her home. She suffered blunt impact injuries to her head and body. According to deputies, Hagwell kicked the toddler in the head then stuck her in a closet, where she eventually passed away. Deputies say Hagwell moved her body from the closet to the woods.

Deputies were made aware of the situation after Hagwell and the child’s mother, 23-year old Destinee Merrell, called authorities to report the 3-year-old girl missing.

The mother was charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
