Faith Time: Black History Month

Normally, when we talk to Levon Manzie, it’s in his capacity as a Mobile City Councilman.  Today we’re talking to him about his day job.  Manzie is the Assistant Pastor at St. Joseph Baptist Church in Whistler.  Sunday morning the congregation was holding its Black History Month program.

The fight for civil rights has had long ties to churches.  Manzie points out churches were one of the places where African Americans could meet, organize and hold leadership positions in the pre-civil-rights era.  The most prominent icon for black history month is, of course, Martin Luther King Jr.  In the video above Manzie discusses how King’s life as a minister helped shape history.
