Erin Billa tells WKRG News 5 that she has started a foundation to honor her husband, Officer Justin Billa and families of other fallen first responders. The Justin Billa Foundation will also work to bring the community and police together.
“I don’t want anyone to forget his sacrifice. I want to continue his name on. I don’t want to just remember his death on February 20th. I want to make sure the good work he was doing continues,” Billa told News 5’s Devon Walsh.
Mrs. Billa says that the community support in the wake of her husband’s shooting death has been overwhelming. She says that she wants to make sure that spirit of support and community continues, and that it doesn’t take a tragedy to make that happen.
“From the beginning, I knew I had to do something out of this. People came out of nowhere supporting me. I knew I had to do something to support other people,” Billa said.
Erin Billa told News 5’s Devon Walsh that the foundation has already scheduled its first event, a community picnic. Information on that event is below.
Bill said her husband was all about serving the community, and that is what she wants to do now.
“He would love it. I wish he was here to see it all. This was his goal was in police work, and this is my way to carry it on in a different way.”
Justin Billa was shot and killed in the line of duty on February 20th responding to a domestic violence call.
Mrs. Billa also says some of the money that she raises from the foundation will go toward the family of fallen officers to help them in their time of need.
