PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — What do spray paint, outdoor graffiti, a law firm and charities have in common? Well, if it’s Gallery Night in Pensacola, the common theme is “fun with a purpose!” Every month, Gallery Night in Pensacola offers kids and adults lots of opportunities to have fun and enjoy downtown. And on this particular block of Romana Street, it offers the opportunity to graffiti til you drop!
“You grab a can of paint and think I’ll do this, or maybe I’ll do this. You see people really create original things,” says Pensacola attorney Joe Zarzaur who came up with the idea of Legal Graffiti. It’s a chance for people to spray paint whatever they like on a portable and recycled cardboard and vinyl wall.
“I wanted kids to enjoy Gallery Night and downtown. I want parents to enjoy Gallery Night. I want Pensacola residents to enjoy their city which is so awesome,” says Zarzaur.
But it’s more than just fun. People who spray paint pay a minimum 3 dollar donation to a local charity and Zarzaur’s law firm matches those donations, dollar for dollar. Some donations have reached as high as $500 and Zarzaur’s firm has matched those.
“I want the charities to be getting exposed to people who might now know who they are and what they do in the community,” says Zarzaur.
Since 2012, Legal Graffiti has raised thousands of dollars for local charities. That’s a blessing says Autism Pensacola’s CEO Cate Merrill. “To have someone who’s willing to do this and a captive audience like Gallery Night and to match everything that’s being donated, that’s amazing,” says Merrill.
Amazing is also the way lots of graffiti fun-lovers describe Legal Graffiti. A Pensacola sailor, who grew up in New York, smiled as he spray painted the wall.
“It takes me back to my teenage years, but now I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble. It’s great! It’s really great,” he said.
Gallery Night is held the 3rd Friday of every month in downtown Pensacola. The next Gallery Night is May 17. Legal Graffiti is at on Romana Street just off Palafox Place.
