Bishop State Community College announced Monday a special guest will be attending the college’s graduation ceremony in May. Former Second Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, will deliver the commencement speech during the spring graduation.
Dr. Biden is married to former Vice President Joe Biden, who served under President Barack Obama, from 2009 to 2017.
Dr. Biden has received numerous degrees in education throughout her career and spoke about the importance of community colleges.
“I have long said that community colleges are America’s best kept secret,” Dr. Biden said in a press release. “I believe we need to celebrate community colleges – and their students – for who they really are: innovative, inspiring and essential.”
The graduation ceremony will take place Thursday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center in downtown Mobile.
During her time as Second Lady, Dr. Biden led the first-ever White House Summit on Community Colleges and has visited over fifty community colleges campuses to highlight innovative workforce partnerships and career training.
“Dr. Jill Biden understands the impact community colleges have in providing postsecondary education opportunities in our country,” said Bishop State President Dr. Reginald Sykes in a press release.
