DISTURBING ARREST: Conecuh County Teacher Arrested On Child Porn Charges

News

A man who teaches computer classes to high school students in southwest Alabama now faces several criminal charges involving child pornography and traveling to another country for illicit sexual contact. The investigation is massive and started more than one year ago. It involves Homeland Security, the US Attorney’s Office, and the Conecuh County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect’s name is Clarence Edward Evers Jr. He faces several charges including production of child pornography, transportation of child pornography, receipt of child pornography, accessing with intent to view child pornography and foreign travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual contact. Federal authorities arrested him Thursday at Hillcrest High School in Evergreen. According to the Conecuh County School Superintendent, he was a classroom teacher as late as Thursday. U.S. Attorney Kenyen Brown, Evers also had a connection to the Boy Scouts of America in Conecuh County.

According to the criminal indictment, this investigation started in December 2014 when Homeland Security received a complaint regarding the sexual abuse of a minor in Bangkok, Thailand. Homeland Security identified the suspect as Clarence Edward Evers, Jr. Court documents also reveal Evers has travelled to Thailand during the summer since 2002 and allegedly used facebook to contact this victim in December 2014. He is accused of sexually abusing the minor the summer of 2014. Court documents show Evers allegedly accessed his facebook account on a school computer. Federal investigators executed a search warrant on April 1, 2015, at his home at 301 Perryman Street in Evergreen. Several computers, hard drives, and digital media devices were seized. According to investigators, forensic analysis of those items revealed downloaded images of child pornography, specifically young, Thai, males.

Forensic investigators also seized evidence from emails they say are from Clarence Edward Evers, Jr. The emails are stated to be between Evers and others he met in Thailand. The email conversations detail sexual encounters with boys in Thailand. Investigators tracked the IP addresses of these emails, and many were sent from a computer with the Conecuh County School System. Other emails appear to be written while Evers was in Thailand.

One email from December 2011 reveals disturbing information involving Evers status as a classroom teacher. According to court documents, Evers describes being attracted to two of his students. Here is the email excerpt:“…As for me, for all the years I’ve been teaching, I’ve never had anything even remotely ‘tempting’. Until this year. This year has brought a couple of 9th graders that are very intriguing. One is very much a puppy–comes in tumbling in at break every day to give me an update on his life and pester me with bizarre questions. Just turned 15, but looks all of 12…The other is tall, very darkskinned (but Caucasian) broody thing whom I have yet to chat with, but is *very* easy on the eyes…I’m awaiting the right time to grab a couple of pix (big surprise, huh?)

Evers is scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court on Friday, February 12.
