BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — A toddler died when his parents’ SUV ran over him in the parking lot of a Waffle House in Brandon, authorities said.
The 2-year-old boy, who authorities did not identify, was pronounced dead at Brandon Hospital.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says the boy’s family was leaving a Waffle House, 1412 SR-60 at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, when the 2007 Chevy Tahoe driven by his father, 29-year-old Guillermo Junior Montoya Rios struck him.
The child was hit by the front passenger-side tire. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Investigators say the child’s parents mistakenly believed the child was already in the car and that the other parent had placed him inside of the vehicle.
Authorities said neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the incident. It’s unclear if charges have been filed.
Further information was not immediately available.
