In an exclusive interview with News 5, Alison Spann sat down with the director of the CIA, John Brennan, at their headquarters in Langley, Virginia on Saturday.
The past week has been a tumultuous one for Director John Brennan, and others who work in the intelligence community.
“I’ve never seen a time when there have been so many issues of such consequence,” said Brennan during the interview.
Last Thursday, 84 people were killed when a large truck plowed through a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France. The driver, who has been identified as Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, was shot and killed by police. Authorities found firearms, explosives and grenades inside the truck.
Yesterday, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack however Director John Brennan warns that may not be true. “I wouldn’t be surprised if ISIS has claimed credit for it irrespective of their role. I think one of their objectives has been to incite these types of attacks.” Brennan continued,”That’s why they put things out on the internet- their propaganda. They are trying to get people to take up arms and to kill and slaughter innocents. So whether or not he had direct contact with ISIL, I think ISIL is wanting to say that their efforts to encourage people are having these types of results.”
The Director warns that the United States must stay vigilant in its fight against terrorism. “I think these terrorist groups like ISIL and Al Qaeda would still like to carry out attacks here in the Homeland, but I think it is much more difficult for them to do so, but it doesn’t mean that we aren’t impenetrable. That’s why we have to remain ever vigilant and why we work so vigorously to try to prevent these types of attacks,” Brennan said.
Coming up tomorrow on News 5, Alison Spann will have more from her exclusive interview with John Brennan. Tomorrow, she talks to him about ISIS and what the terror group means to you here at home.
